HANSON Song of Democracy
STURM, SORENSON, BERNROIDER For the Breath
(World Premier Commission for the Rochester Symphony Centennial.)
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 9
We close our centennial season reflecting on the power of music to break down barriers and unify people. Song of Democracy, based on the poetry of Walt Whitman, calls on Americans to consider how we live in community together. For the Breath speaks to the heart of all that is to be celebrated in the vibrant musical history of Rochester by exploring the beauty of togetherness. We look toward our second century with Beethoven's revolutionary vision calling for universal community in his triumphant Ninth Symphony.
