THE SPIRIT OF US
HANSON Song of Democracy
SCHOENBERG A Survivor from Warsaw
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 9
We close our centennial season reflecting on the power of music to break down barriers and unify people. Song of Democracy, based on the poetry of Walt Whitman, calls on Americans to consider how we live in community together. A Survivor from Warsaw depicts the breakdown of community with a remembrance of massacre during the Holocaust. We look toward our second century with Beethoven's revolutionary vision calling for universal community in his triumphant Ninth Symphony.
